Things that surprise me about Mexico

Public square in Chelem

Onions in the markets are sold already peeled.

Amazon deliveries take one week but they deliver.

Many Mexicans are overweight and the Government has billboards talking about combatting obesity.

Mexicans love their soda drinks.

Mexicans love their botanas (snacks)

I am in a small beach town called Chelem. It is mainly safe.

There are a lot of dog posses in the streets. You have to be careful and walk with attention and intention.

Typical Mexican houses have a sink with an incorporated washboard.

I wash my clothes in this washing sink…works perfectly fine

Food products are available in a small format. Like really small.

It was so hot at one point that I got a heat rash on my arm.

They sell cigarettes and you can actually see the packs! (strange for me as a Canadian – we hide the cigarettes)

I actually haven’t seen a Mexican smoke yet – I’m wondering if they do it only in special occasions

Cigarettes on display at OXXO – a convenience store like 7 11 or the Québec Dep

The botanas (snacks) are full of unhealthy chemicals

I haven’t seen real ice cream. It’s mostly Nestle brand pumped full of chemicals

Because of the humidity and the sea, household items like fans, shower heads, faucets rust quickly and need to be replaced frequently

Uber is cheap, mototaxis are cheaper but very noisy and combis are even cheaper but full and hot

People get around in mototaxis in Chelem

I never thought I would say this but I like to take cold showers in Mexico

The heat. More heat. Humidity. More humidity.

Closed expats groups – very territorial

I haven’t seen any mosques where I’ve been and I haven’t seen any Muslims

Internet is available in plazas in Mérida

Coating on Advil dissolves because it’s too hot

Mexican women buy  hand fans and use them because it’s so hot.

In plazas, they will offer to take your blood pressure. It’s very random…

My butt sweats because it’s so hot

I take cold showers

While waking I empty water bottles on me

Mexican tourists complain about the heat in merida

Yucatecos eat a lot of pork

Food that is not fried is cooked in tomatoes, more tomatoes and more tomatoes, giving it a sweet taste

Huevos motuleños – a traditional Yucatecan breakfast. Fried eggs served on fried corn tortillas with black beans. Tomato based salsa with diced ham, peas and cheese. This plate served with fried plantains

I am highly disappointed with the food in Yucatan. It is extremely bland, it lacks flavor. There is a lot of fried options and junk food. There is a lot of pork, it is a main staple of the diet. Although I am in a fishing town and I see the fishermen go out, the seafood options are blah. I have yet to be impressed, but I will continue my quest for good food.

It is very hard to find butter with salt, although margarine with salt is available, but everyone knows that margarine is not a healthy option! You can find salted butter at Costco but it’s sold in a 5kg brick.

I haven’t seen any planes spraying chemicals in the sky. The days have been clear, without any clouds, except for the hurricane tail we felt last week. It rained a lot and many streets were flooded.
